A PERFECT CITY FOR HISTORY BUFFS
Southport is thought to have been first occupied by European settlers as far back as the 1500’s when Spanish explorers arrived in the area. The city was originally named Smithville when it was founded in 1792, a tribute to Benjamin Smith, a colonel in the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War. It was not until 1887 that the town was renamed Southport, in hopes to rebrand it as a shipping port for the region.
SOUTHPORT DURING WAR TIME
Today’s Fort Johnston at Southport was once a British fort during the Revolutionary War and was occupied by soldiers of the Confederacy to aid blockade runners in supplying the army during the Civil War. Fort Johnston was seized by the Union Army after the Battle of Fort Fisher in January 1865. Today, the fort is the location of the North Carolina Maritime Museum.
Southport’s beautiful coastal location makes it a popular tourist attraction, especially during the summer months. The city has plenty of quaint retail shops, art galleries and restaurants that are worth visiting any time of the year.
